Serenity

The balmy air blew in through the open window as I sat and read
She lay curled up on the bed, sound asleep
For the first time in days the cat was quiet
Affectionate
No sound, save for the breeze and the occasional rattle of the blinds
and the swish of the turning pages
she awoke, her eyes a brighter green than usual
not a word passed between us, just a gesture
a small wave
a cool wind caressed the room briefly as a thin rain began to hiss down outside
we stayed still
silent
locked in the moment’s tranquility
I stood and walked out to close the rest of the windows
just like that, the spell was broken
and the rain began to pour
