Away messages

On my Instant Messenger program I have about seven away messages saved, but I try to mix it up with new ones when I feel inspired to create one. Most of the time my friends never read them or simply assume that I have posted it before and so don’t really check them with any sense of urgency to find out what I am currently doing. As such, I feel the need to leave interesting messages to reward those who take the time and energy to check in on me.

Over everyone’s Christmas break I met someone really cool. We enjoyed the time we spent together (I think) and have since kept up a conversation of sorts over IM. One day I came home from work and was a bit tired so I took a nap. Sometime during my slumber the telephone rang. I sat up, still half asleep, and picked up the phone. Let me say, in my own defense, that I thought it might be this person calling me. There was no precedent for her calling, nor had I given her the number at that point, but in my sleep fogged brain it was almost a certainty that it was her.

As we can probably guess, it was NOT her. It was a telemarketer wanting to interest me in all the wonderful things that I could do if I gave them my credit card number in exchange for being allowed to visit a time-share conference or something. This poor lady, it’s not her fault she woke me up, she doesn’t even know who the fuck I am. Even so, she got yelled at and heard several slurred obscenities and garbled explanations before she finally got hung up on.

I sat up, thought about the situation and then went to my computer. Typing quickly I put up the following away message:

I had the most amazing dream that she called and said “I’m outside, let me in.” I hated waking up today.

One of my better ones I think. I left that up and went to play a video game.

An hour or so later I came back and she was on-line. I hadn’t actually expected her to read it. If this had been a movie, the sheer embarrassment factor would have charmed the socks right off her. As it happened I got to spend about an hour worrying whether I was treading the fine line between being cute and being really creepy.

I think it turned out ok, but still, I’d like to hear your comments. Is it cute or creepy?
